The Most Powerful Behavioral Tool You've Never Heard Of
Use this and you'll see guaranteed results for well-being engagement.
Welcome to the Well-being Wire, the bi-weekly newsletter focused on practical strategies and solutions that advance well-being in the workplace.
What's the most powerful tool for changing employee behavior?
It's not incentives.
It's not communication.
And it's not motivation.
It's defaults.
Behavioral economists have spent decades studying why people make decisions.
One of the most consistent findings is something called the default effect.
Simply put, people tend to stick with whatever option is pre-selected.
Not because they've carefully evaluated every alternative, but because making decisions requires effort.
And humans naturally conserve cognitive energy.
As an example, this principle completely transformed retirement savings.
When employers required employees to actively enroll, participation was relatively low. When enrollment became automatic and employees had to opt out instead, participation rates exploded.
Same people.
Same benefits.
Different default.
What's interesting is how often organizations unknowingly create friction.
Employees must search for information, find a registration page, create an account, choose from multiple options, remember passwords.
Every additional step reduces participation.
Behavioral science teaches us that if you want people to take action, make the desired behavior the path of least resistance.
Don't ask employees to climb the mountain.
Move the mountain closer to them.
The biggest lesson from behavioral economics isn't that people are lazy.
It's that behavior follows design.
When participation is low, don't just ask how to motivate people.
Ask how many unnecessary decisions you've placed in their way.
Share the knowledge! If you know someone who needs these insights, forward this newsletter and make their program better (and if someone already forwarded you this, click here to subscribe for future issues 🙂).
